Not Just Another Holiday

Awoke with bells this morning,
Christmas on my mind:
Not the modern Christmases
But the ancient kind.

When folks were warm and cordial
As friendly as could be,
While visiting each other
With peace and love and glee.

When the hearth would burn,
And chimneys gave off smoke.
And care for one another
Was not some ill-fate joke.

And Christmas was the time
Men's hearts were stirred for God
Who sent His Son to dwell
Midst onerous-human pod.

Not just another holiday
To idle the time away...
But one endearing to the heart
And memorable always.
